A Passionate, Powerful Pioneer
Barbara A. (Soule) Breed passed away Tuesday, August 26, after a lengthy battle with cancer at the age of 73. In keeping with her wishes, she spent her final days at home in Pembroke, NH in the company of her family and beloved pets.
Barbara (BABs) was a bold leader, successful businesswoman and accomplished equestrian. Though she wore many ‘hats’ nothing came as natural to her as the horse. Born in Coatesville, PA and raised in Virginia, BABs attended a riding academy where she met her husband, Harold “Buddy” Breed. They started their own horse farm in Clifton, VA and later relocated to Pembroke, NH where they began a successful Appaloosa breeding program. Along with breeding, training and showing, BABs became a vibrant activist for the equine world. Since the 1970s she has been an officer and/or board member for the Granite State Appaloosa Assoc., NH Quarter Horse Assoc., Nat’l Appaloosa Assoc., American Quarter Horse Assoc. and NH Thoroughbred Breeders Assoc. In these positions BABs worked tirelessly to increase awareness of and improve the horse community- and this was just her pastime passion.
As an acting Parliamentarian since the 1980’s she held prominent positions in her business career that include: board member of the Greater Concord Chamber of Commerce, member of the Business/Professional Women’s Assoc. (recipient of the Woman of the Year Award, 1978 and appeared in Who’s Who of American Women in 1981), Director of Administration for the National Education Assoc. and the Executive Director for Make-A-Wish of NH. The last of which she retired from in 2004 after 10 years of making dreams come true for children with life-threatening illnesses. During her tenure more than 250 wishes were granted.
Remarkably BABs had several hobbies and talents she cultivated with equal devotion. She was an accomplished artist, cartoonist, journalist, photographer, and raised German and Australian Shepherds.
Barbara is predeceased by her mother Bertha D. Landi, Stepfather Victor R. Landi, a brother Frank “Butch” Soule, and a son Allen “Randy” Breed. She leaves behind her husband Harold (Buddy) Breed of 57 years, daughter Denice D. (Noel) Brouillet and grandchildren Kelley A. Noel and Kyle L. Noel, all of Pembroke, NH.
BABs has touched the lives of so many as a mentor, source of strength and guidance, wealth of knowledge and fountain of youthful determination and dedication. She chose to live by the mantra: Don’t count the days; make the days count. Her life force will be felt and live on in the countless people who came to know her. There will be a “Celebration of Her Life” held at the Cat N’ Fiddle Restaurant, Concord NH, Sunday, Sept 7, 2008 starting at 5:00 pm.
In lieu of flowers, all heartfelt donations may be made to the following organizations: Concord Regional Visiting Nurses Assoc., The American Cancer Society.
